London Had a Problem Nobody Could Ignore

London, 1858.
The city was growing rapidly.
More people meant more waste.
And much of that waste eventually ended up in the River Thames.
The Thames had effectively become an enormous open sewer.
Human waste.
Industrial pollution.
Animal remains.
And household rubbish all accumulated in the river.
Then came the summer.
It was unusually hot.
The river level fell.
Sewage and other waste were exposed along the banks and baked under the sun.
The smell became unbearable.
London had entered what became known as The Great Stink.

Even Parliament Couldn't Escape
The smell wasn't confined to London's poorest neighborhoods.
It reached the Palace of Westminster.
The Houses of Parliament stood directly beside the polluted river.
Officials tried to make the situation bearable.
Curtains were treated with chloride of lime in an attempt to mask the smell.
It barely helped.
The stench became so overwhelming that Parliament was pushed into action.
For years, politicians had debated London's sanitation problems.
Now they couldn't ignore them.
The smell had become a political emergency.
The Science Was Still Being Understood

There was another problem.
People didn't yet fully understand how cholera spread.
Many Victorians believed that diseases such as cholera were carried through poisonous air, or miasma.
But physician John Snow had already gathered evidence connecting cholera to contaminated water.
His ideas were not immediately accepted by everyone.
The Great Stink therefore happened at a fascinating moment in medical history.
London was beginning to understand that the city's water and sewage systems were directly connected to public health.
Then Parliament Finally Acted

The government moved remarkably quickly.
A bill providing funding for a massive new sewer system passed in just 18 days.
The man chosen to solve the problem was civil engineer Joseph Bazalgette.
His solution was ambitious.
Instead of allowing sewage to flow directly into central London and the Thames
He designed a network of enormous underground intercepting sewers.
The waste would be carried eastward, away from the heart of the city.
But Bazalgette wasn't simply building tunnels.
He was redesigning London.
The Sewers Became Streets
Some of Bazalgette's new sewers ran alongside the Thames.
Above them
Engineers constructed massive embankments.
The project reclaimed land from the river and created some of the riverside spaces that are now iconic parts of London.
Victoria Embankment.
Albert Embankment.
Chelsea Embankment.
What looked like ordinary city infrastructure was actually covering a revolutionary sanitation system underneath.
A Cathedral Beneath the City

Bazalgette's project required an extraordinary amount of construction.
Historic England records that the scheme replaced more than 150 miles of old sewers and created more than 1,000 miles of new ones, using approximately 318 million bricks.
The system also required huge pumping stations.
One of the most famous was Crossness Pumping Station.
Its elaborate Victorian ironwork was so impressive that it earned comparisons to a cathedral.
Another major pumping station at Abbey Mills became known as the "Cathedral of Sewage."
The infrastructure was ugly in purpose
But astonishing in execution.
The Smell Disappeared
Bazalgette's system was eventually completed in 1875.
It transformed London's sanitation.
Instead of allowing enormous quantities of sewage to accumulate in central London
The new network carried it away from the most densely populated areas.
The system didn't instantly solve every health problem.
And the sewage was initially discharged farther downstream rather than fully treated.
But the transformation was enormous.
London had finally begun building a sanitation system appropriate for a modern industrial city.
The Engineer Who Thought Ahead
Bazalgette made an important calculation.
He didn't design the system only for London's population at the time.
He designed it with future growth in mind.
That decision helped the Victorian sewer network remain useful for generations.
Much of the original system is still part of London's infrastructure today.
More than 160 years later
London is still building new infrastructure beneath the city to handle the demands of a much larger population.
From Disgust to Engineering
The Great Stink is remembered because it sounds almost ridiculous.
A city was forced to confront a sanitation crisis because the river smelled so terrible that politicians couldn't work.
But behind the strange story was something much more important.
London's rapid growth had created an infrastructure problem.
The city could either continue living with it
Or completely redesign the way it handled waste.
It chose the second option.

Some of history's greatest engineering projects begin with failure.
London's old sanitation system had failed spectacularly.
The Great Stink forced politicians to act.
Bazalgette turned that crisis into one of the most ambitious public-health engineering projects of the Victorian era.

They are using the legacy of a system born from one of the most notorious smells in history.
